VIKINGS 53, MIAMI (OH) 49. AT HOME. SEVEN AND OH.

One hundred and two points, friends, and I don’t think anybody in the building sat down after halftime. Joe Snyderwine has built a monster down in Oxford, and our guys still won.

Seven and oh. The longest winning start I’ve seen in my career. I covered high school teams that didn’t start seven and oh.

My neighbor’s kids watched from my porch with Donna. Sofia, seven now, made a sign that said “GO VIKINGS, BEAT THE RED BIRDS” and taped it to our storm door. Leo, nine, has decided he’s going to play for Cleveland State someday, and has started doing push-ups during commercials. He did forty in the fourth quarter. That’s commitment.

Four straight wins over the RedHawks with this group, my people. And I’m going to tell you something: Miami (OH) is going to be great this year anyway. They’re that good. We just happen to be a little bit better on the right day.

Five pierogi. Sofia’s sign stays up until spring.

"Lil" Ken HogmanesThe Doubter

Four points. A hundred and two total. The Vikings are seven and oh, and they’ve beaten Miami (OH) four straight times, which I’d like to describe as “statistically unusual” before Nadia hears about it and finds a way to make it my fault.

She heard about it. Tuesday at the Lantern Room, Nadia set down my beer, looked me in the eye and said, “Your team is better than mine. Today.” Then she picked up the little gold trophy she bought before the season, the one that says “2027 — WE’LL SEE,” and moved it to the very front of the bar, under the light, where everyone could see it. “We’ll see, Ken,” she said. “We’ll see.”

The analysis: Miami (OH) is legitimately excellent, and the Vikings just won a shootout against them. That’s a statement. The defense still gave up forty-nine, which is more of a question.

Teresa watched with me at the bar. She’d worked the night before and fell asleep on my shoulder in the third quarter. She woke up for the last play, looked at the screen and said, “Did we win?” We. She said we. I’ve been thinking about that pronoun for four days.

Back and forth

Mickey

Seven and oh, Kenny!

Ken

Four straight over Miami (OH). Nadia’s trophy is now under a spotlight.

Mickey

Teresa said “we”!

Ken

She was half asleep. It might not be admissible. I’m admitting it anyway.

Final Verdict

A hundred and two points, seven and oh, a sign on the storm door, and a pronoun Ken will be thinking about until Christmas.

Split Decision is fiction. Mickey Bridges, Ken Hogmanes and The Lakefront Ledger are invented; the games and scores are not.
