Vikings 42, Arizona State 14, at home. TEN AND TWO.
Coach Morales, who built this offense and now coaches Arizona State’s, came back to Cleveland, and our guys beat his guys by twenty-eight. I found him after the game, by the buses, and gave him a hug. He said, “Mick, I taught them too well.” I said, “You did, Coach. Thank you.” Then I gave him a Baraka in a paper bag for the flight. He’ll be back. I hope he’s always back, except on the scoreboard.
And this year, friends, for the first time, Thanksgiving wasn’t at my house. Kenny and Teresa hosted. In their new apartment. With four hundred records in the hall closet and Kenny wearing a cardigan indoors because the coats are in the closet with the records. Donna brought the pierogi. Sam brought the oak chair with the T on it so Teresa could sit in her own chair at her own table. Bridget didn’t come. She sent a text: “working. big December. love you.” I know what that means.
The Big 12 title game is next. Against the RedHawks. Again.
Four pierogi.
A twenty-eight-point win over Arizona State to finish ten and two. The Vikings finished seven and two in league play and get a rematch with the undefeated RedHawks for the conference title. That’s the game. Everything else is preamble.
We hosted Thanksgiving. I want the record to show the following: the turkey was moist, the records were safely in the closet, the plant survived being near the oven, and I did not burn anything because Teresa did not let me near anything that could burn. Mickey cried during grace. Donna did the dishes and refused help. Sam reassembled our wobbly coffee table without being asked. Leo Reyes came by for pie and asked if he could see “the famous record closet.” I showed him. He looked at it for a long time and said, “Mr. Ken, that’s a lot of sad music.” I said, “It’s a curated collection.” He said, “It’s a lot of sad music.” Out of the mouths of babes.
My father called. Foggy day. He asked whose house we were at. I said mine. He said, “You have a house?” I said, “An apartment, Dad. With Teresa.” He said, “Is the plant alive?” I said yes. He said, “Good.”
Back and forth
You hosted Thanksgiving, Kenny!
Teresa hosted. I carried things and was told not to touch the stove.
Bridget said “big December.”
Everybody in Athens is talking in code. I’ve stopped trying to decode it.
Ten and two, a hug and a Baraka for an old coordinator, the first Thanksgiving in Ken’s home, and a Bobcat in Athens too busy for pie.
Split Decision is fiction. Mickey Bridges, Ken Hogmanes and The Lakefront Ledger are invented; the games and scores are not.
